Julia Rohde on German Bundesliga result list.

I did not expect that, but today I noticed that a familiar name appeared on the German weightlifting Bundesliga result list: Julia Rohde. She once considered retiring from weightlifting. But there she is again.

Her numbers are a little down from what I am used to, however still good, but not good enough for international competitions just yet. However most of the time the top German weightlifters take it "easy" in Bundesliga and rather go 6/6.

Here are the results. Julia went 77kg/100kg.

Norik Vardanyan Interviews

Clint Darden provides some interviews with Norik Verdanyan. Norik is the son of weightlifting legend Yuri Vardanyan. Yuri achieved a 400kg total at 82.5kg also one of the greatest sinclair totals (~491 sinclair) of all time.

The interview - part 1:

Part 2:

And Norik on competition preparation and training:

Norik on his fathers expectations and mental toughness:

Noriks 380kg training total (same numbers as in London 2012):

Also his fathers 405kg total:

Apti Aukhadov 200kg Jerk double

Apti seems to like instagram and gives us regular updates. Now Squat Jerk 200kg for a double.

Aleksey Lovchev squats 300kg

Some more easy looking squats. This time 300kg x2  by the russian super heavyweight Aleksey Lovchev. He is currently listed as the reserve man for this years world behind Chingis Mogushkov and Ruslan Albegov.

D'Angelo Osorio Snatch PR

D'Angelo Osorio sets a new Snatch PR of 155kg after a great save where he almost stumbles over the camera window which is built in the platform (at least that is my guess what it is). This is for the funny close ups you see e.g. at the Olympics which are somewhat useless in my opinion - or even dangerous in this case.

Apti Aukhadov flying

Now Apti is flying around in Chekov. And as a reference according to wikipedia Apti is 178cm. Which makes the platform height 140cm according to my approximation :). Picture of the approximation is below the video.

Apti Aukhadov training vids

The weight moved in these videos are lightweight for him. However his technique is so nice, it is a pleasure for the eyes to watch him lift.

Clean and Jerk 195kg for a double

Squat Jerk 180kg x3 from the rack

What to do with a broken arm.

Squats of course. But there is more. Have some fun.

Mart Seim squats 320kg

Richie Petterson breaks Newz Zealand record

The 85kg lifter Richie Petterson basically sets a new PR, which makes it a new New Zealand  Clean and Jerk record of 191kg.

Kasperi from Finnland

That little fellow is cute :). Look at his passion and fight :). Hope he stays with this sport forever :). Kasperi starts at 5m33s.

Snatch grip jerk

The most badass grip adjustment I have ever seen. And also probably the coolest platform ever :) (outdoor on grass :)).

I really wonder why they take the videos down and then dont show them themselfs? Looks like lose-lose to me. If they would at least upload it themselfs it would lose-win?

First post there is this video:

Herbert Ehrbar Grand Prix 2013

In this years Herbert Ehrbar Grand Prix in Nagold some lifters of the German national squad did appear for some performance test before the European Championships 2013. And they seem to be in pretty good shape. Probably not for winning the Europeans but for themselves they are.

Michael Müller (85kg class) with 147kg Snatch and 186kg clean and Jerk:

Simon Brandhuber (69kg class) with 140kg Snatch and 160kg Clean and Jerk:

Robert Joachim (69kg class) with 133kg Snatch and 167kg Clean and Jerk:

Sabine Kusterer (58kg class) with 90kg Snatch and 109kg Clean and Jerk:

Mandy Wedow (75kg class) with 97kg Snatch and 117kg Clean and Jerk:

Yvonne Kranz (75kg+ class) with 95kg Snatch and 124kg Clean and Jerk:

Here are also the complete videos (including maybe some of Germans future lifters):

Finnish weightlifting team training camp

This video is from the Finnish weightlifting team in preparation for the European Championships 2013. The video is featuring Milko Tokolo and Anna Everi plus some more. What impressed me the most in this video are clean grip snatches from the floor and hang by Anna Everi at 3:25.

Martin Seim 225kg Clean and Jerk

Mart Seim with a 225kg Clean and Jerk. Check his youtube channel for more videos from him.

Torokhtiy Oleksiy Snatch 200kg

Torokhtiy Oleksiy Snatches 200kg to "I got you babe". You just need some proper training atmosphere ;).

Impressive clean and jerk miss

This is guy a fighter. Weight can only be guessed. Maybe 196kg (each side: two reds, blue, yellow and a small white) or 206kg if the "blue"s are a 25kgs.

Khadzhimurat Akkayev at 16years old

Khadzhimurat Akkayev at 16 already clean and jerking 185kg @85kg bodyweight. Also technique and crying habits are pretty similar to today.

Artem Ivanov Snatch 190kg technical analysis

Artem Ivanov Snatchs 185kg and 190kg plus the bar path plus bar speed.

Not text book - at least as far as I know. However it seems to work for him.

News from Ireland.

Guess who? Clarence Kennedy: Snatch 162.5kg and a Clan of 202.5kg

Here are a some videos of squats:

Peter Kirkbride with a 240kg Front squat

Kendrick Ferris with a triple with 263kg:

A chinese female front squatting something around 3 times her bodyweight (voices says 140kg but the plates look like a little more):

And some Front squat racking gone wrong.

Karen Tovmasjan Snatch 130kg triple from blocks

Here is a little training update from Karen Tovmasjan. Nice speed under the bar:

Tandem Jerks

Here is a "fun" exercise for "normal" guys to put up some numbers of the big guys. However that ain't easy either.

I don't know what they lift normally. But 210kg is a nice number.

Here is also how the big guys do it - tandem clean and jerk by Matthias Steiner and Almir Velagic - 333.3kg:

Jirka Orsag Interview

Gregor from AllThingsGym did an Interview with Jirka Orsag about weightlifting and training and all sort of things. It is definitely worth a read. My personal highlights:

What is a good piece of advice you got in the past?

Weightlifting hurts, but hold on. It’s worth it!

And the training parts as a whole, but still a sample:

I don’t do a lot assistance exercise.
I train only snatch, clean and jerk, squats and deadlifts.

Video of him setting the +105kg Junior Clean and Jerk record:

Behdad Salimi 214kg Snatch

The actual world record in the +105kg category in the Snatch by Behdad Salimikordasiabi (2011 world champion and 2012 olympic champion):

Three world record attempts from three lifters.

Damon Kelly seems to update his youtube database :)... Here is a the last lifts of the 77kg Clean and Jerk from the 2011 Paris world weightlifting championship. As Damon wrote:

A rare occurrence where three different lifters, in three consecutive attempts try to break the world record for the 77kg with a 211kg attempt in the clean and jerk. This was at the 2011 World Weightlifting Championships in Paris. Sa Jae-Hyouk (KOR), Lu Xiaojun (CHN) and Su Dajin (CHN) all attempt to break the clean and jerk world record but to no avail.

Artem Udachyn Clean and Jerk 243kg

Here is another video of the 2013 Ukranian Cup. It is Artem Udachyn Clean and Jerking 243kg.

Miika Antti-Roiko 200kg clean double

There is also nice lifting going on in Finland! Miika Antti-Roiko takes 200kg for a clean double.

As well as a 155kg Snatch:

Snatch high pulls to a stick

This is an interesting exercise:
There is an article about Snatch high pulls to a stick on ironmind.com - if you want more - however this could be enough: cite:
The main purpose of pulling to a stick is that it keeps you honest

Andrei Aramnau Interview after 2013 Belarus Cup

Here is some update of Andrei Aramnau - he competed as +105kg in the Belarusian nationals and totaled 421kg (196kg/225kg).

Now he is in preparation for the European Championships. And he is still unsatisfied with his situation - however it sounds like it is improving (coaching situation).

Read on allthingsgym.

Jiri Orsag 190kg Snatch

The latest training video of Jiri Orsag! It is a 190kg Snatch.

Olympic Weightlifting at the 2013 Arnold Sports Festival

The first videos from the 2013 Arnold Sports Festival are appearing:

Muhammad Begaliev probably weighing 77kg lifts 155kg in the Snatch and 185kg in the Clean and Jerk (he is in Range of the winner of the 105kg - see below)
Begaliev totaled 314kg and finished 24th at the 2011 World Weightlifting Championships in Paris where he lifted for Uzbekistan.

Kevin Cornell lifts 155kg Snatch and 195kg at 105kg (however poor video quality):

Where he beat Spencer Moorman who had a 150kg Snatch and 195kg Clean and Jerk. He missed 156kg and 157kg in the Snatch. So a close game between those two. Spencer lifts at 2:40min:

135kg Snatch and 165kg Cleand and Jerk at 77kg are some lifts for Leo:

And also the lifts of Fernando Saraiva Reis

Kendrick Ferris power jerks 193kg for a triple

Title says it all.

Artem Udachyn Jerks 270kg

Here is a very huge Jerk by the Ukrainian Artem Udachyn.

Marcin Dolega lifting in France

Meanwhile in France. Marcin Dolega lifts 175kg, 180kg and 185kg in the Snatch. 210kg 215kg and 220kg in the Clean and Jerk.

It also seems that the channel owner Daniel Dolega has some videos in his archive ;). Here he only makes the 185kg Snatch and misses the others.

Fernando Saraiva Reis at 2013 Arnold Classic

Here is a 182kg Snatch and a  225kg Clean and Jerk from Fernando Saraiva Reis who will turn 23 in one week.

From wikipedia:
He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the +105 kg event. In this same weight category, Reis won a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games and a silver medal at the 2010 South American Games.

Training Hall video of Columbian and USA Olympic Weightlifers

Enjoy some fast moving Columbian weightlifters. Also not the Columbians have an almost all female cheering crowd (at least it sounds like that).

From the description:
In house meet at LSUS with Team Columbia and Kendrick Farris and Zach S. from Team USA. Video includes Oscar Figueroa (Silver, London 2012), and Diego Salazar (Silver, Beijing 2008)

Rebekah Tiler on youtube

Here is a female British lifter who is still very young. She is 13 years of age I believe. And already snatching 78kg and clean and jerking 102kg with plates falling off. According to a newspaper her bodyweight is 56kg. So that is a double bodyweight clean and jerk.

See yourself:

Interview with Pawel Najdek

Here is a Interview with Pawel Najdek. He is currently coaching Clarence Kennedy who has done the interview. The most interesting part for me is when they talk about training. The polish training regime also seems to be similar to the Bulgarian. Here is some sample provided in the interview page:

Ilya Ilyin: Science of Victory

Here is a documentary about Ilya Ilyins and his way to the London Olympic Games. However the documentary is less scientific as the titles say. However at 13:30 it gives some little insights in his training which seems pretty much identical to the Bulgarian style of training.

Karen Tovmasjan youtube channel

Here are some decent lifts from Karen Tovmasjan's youtube channel. A total of 338kg at 85kg makes him another Master of sports with a youtube channel :).

Artem Udachyn technical analysis video

Here are some videos of Artem Udachyn with an additional technical analysis software output. Not very pretty (but strong) lifts, but some nice software ;):

Snatch 200kg and 205kg (missed):

Clean and Jerk 240kg and 246kg (were the heavier looked better in my opinion):

Ihor Shymechko Snatch 205kg

Ihor Shymechko puts up some decent numbers in the Snatch.

Oleksiy Torokhtiy Power Jerks

Here are some more power jerks from Oleksiy Torokhtiy. If the numbers in the videos are right it is 230kg and 240kg.
Looking at those videos, I really wonder why he struggled so hard at London.

Also here is a 195kg Snatch from the same event. There they had green 10kg plates. So I really wonder why they did not use them for his 240kg attempt? Or is it 240kg at all?

Artem Ivanov Snatch 190kg

Another 190kg pre Olympic Snatch by Artem Ivanov.

The display in the background classifies him as 105kg lifter however. He usually competes at 94kg.

And to again repeat wikipediaHis best total is 420 kg (190 snatch + 230 clean and jerk - Ukrainian Championships 2012).[1] If this had not been completed at a domestic event, it would have represented a substantial increase on the world record at this weight division. Unfortunately at the 2012 Olympic Games, Ivanov did not appear for his weigh-in, prompting speculation of injury, and leaving rival Ilya Ilyin to comfortably retain his title.

2013 US juniors Ian Wilson and D'Angelo Osorio

Ian Wilson lifting 155/194
D'Angelo Osorio lifting 147/180

Very decent numbers for those young guys.

Children weightlifting

Here are some very sweet clips.

An 8 year old Chinese with very good technique.

Hysen Pulaku at age 7 (Snatch 27kg, Clean and Jerk 45kg) and 8 (Snatch 50kg, Clean and Jerk 55kg). But the Chinese boy seems to have better technique ;).

Hysen Pulaku at age 9 (Snatch 52kg, Clean and Jerk 65kg). Not perfect, but man, 9 years old!

At age 14. Already snatching 100kg+ and jerking 140kg+.

Hysen today (more or less) (Snatch 166kg, Clean and Jerk 211kg). Before he was tested positive two weeks before the Olympics in London.

Ilya Ilin Front Squats

Front Squat 250kg  Ilya Ilin style.

Kendrick Farris Clean and squat Jerk 180kg

Kendrick Farris does (at least in my opinion ;)) a power/squat jerk mixture with 180kg. It does not look as good as Lu Xiaojun does it, but it is a full squat anyhow. Kudos.

Hossein Rezazadeh unequal snatch grip

I just came across a video of Hossein Rezazadehs lift at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. I noticed that he takes an unequal grip on the snatch. I also noticed that many times before with other lifters. It is not that easily seen with others as with Hossein. His left hand is more out than the right. And it seems that he does it on purpose.
I really wonder what is the reason for that? How does anyone come up with an unequal grip?

The Russian Approach to Planning a Weightlifting Program

You can download the file from qwa.org or from google drive.

The paper gives some insights into Russian planning for weightlifting. It is written by two guys living in valencia. Vicente Ortiz Cervera and Petr Poletaev (both from the university of valencia). I guess the second one makes this document authentic:

Petr Poletaev, Technical Director of
the Regional Weightlifting Federation
of Valencia, Spain, graduated from
the Central Institute of Physical Cul
ture in Moscow and has held several
titles in weightlifting. He coached the
USSR weightlifting team in 1978-
1987 and the Russian female weight
lifting team in 1990-1992.

Probably the interesting part starts at page 3. However you can read it completely very quickly as it is a short document.

Jiri Orsag training

Here is a training clip of Czech lifter Jiri Orsag. 220kg for two cleans and one jerk.

I really wonder how to write his name (don't even talk about spelling?). In the video title it says Jiri Orsag but the channel is named Jirka Orsag. Or is that not his channel? Anyhow here is the video (I bet no one ever reads until here ;)).

179kg snatch

Kavelasvili snatching 179kg for a new Greece record (at least according to the video description) in the 105kg category.

Artem Ivanov at Ukraine Championships 2012

I just wanted to put together the awesome lifts of Artem Ivanov at Ukraine Championships 2012. And to complete those videos a citation from wikipedia:

Unfortunately at the 2012 Olympic Games, Ivanov did not appear for his weigh-in, prompting speculation of injury, and leaving rival Ilya Ilyin to comfortably retain his title.

Weightlifting calculator

The queensland weightlifting association offers a weightlifting calculator.

It offers two features.

1. Calculations based on max lifts

The lifts of the calculator are.
Clean and Jerk
Power Snatch
Power Clean
Power Jerk
Front Squat
Back Squat
Pull (clean pull or deadlift?)

You enter your max for one specific lift and it calculates what your maxes for other lifts should/could/might be.

2. Your standings.

It will calculate your percentage of the current world record for your weightclass. It also gives you your sinclair scoring and Sinclair-Malone-Meltzer scoring (gives age bonuses for older people).

Sample based on Dmitry Klokov.

He gets no age bonus - if he would be born e.g. 1980 he would. And he also Snatches more than the calculator thinks he could. Same probably applies for the strength related numbers (squats).

Anna Everi Video Compilation

Finnish weightlifter Anna Everi (58kg class) released a new video showing some of her training as well as competition lifts.
You can also see Milko Tokola in the background (e.g. at 1:16 watching) and spotting her squats.

8 Months Pregnant 100 Kilo C&J

I dont know if that is good or bad, but it is incredible. And she also looks happy - so I think it is good.

But I guess she usually competes in a lower weight class (75kg this day) and she also had to adjust her technique.
Bad ass anyways.

Ruslan Albegov Clean and Jerk

Again from the Russian nationals. And also very similar lifts.

In competition 250kg.

In training 245kg.

Ruslan Albegov Snatch 210kg

Here is a nice video of Ruslan Albegov Snatching 210kg. This was done at the Russian nationals 2012 were his main competitors were Evgeny Chigishev and Chingiz Mogushkov.

There is another 210kg Snatch in Training - check the similarity of both lifts.

Medium grip Snatch with 150kg by Norik Vardanian

"I do this exercise about once a week. It helps me a lot with my speed and finishing my pull. I personally think this is a great exercise. I decided to go a little heavier this day."

Bulgarian method spreadsheet

Here is a spreadsheet which is basically the spreadsheetized version of the things you can find under:

This is the plan created by Alex Krychev which was also mentioned here before. In my eyes this exact 16 week plan is used for very advanced lifters  (CMS or above) to peak for a competition. It is probably not very well suited for any lifter who is no professional weightlifter because of training 2 times a day 6 times a week.

I hope I didnt make any mistakes during the creation, if you find one tell me.

Available on Google Docs (to edit choose File-> "Make a Copy" or "Download as")

After copying it you might want to remove the funny conditional formatting I inserted to help me creating the formulas. For doing so select column B and then go to Format->Conditional Formatting. In the menu you can disable all formating by clicking on the "x" on the right hand side.

  • works with kg or pounds
  • enter your maxes at the top part and it calculates your weights
  • in the ‘Round to’ cell you can specify the next biggest multiple to which the percentages will be rounded to; for example 2.5 means weights will be rounded to the next biggest multiple of 2.5kg – so 71.85kg will round to 72.5kg
